The Paradox Of Personal Freedom

The ability to choose your direction in life is both a freeing and crippling thing. No matter when your first encounter with having to choose your direction in life, sometimes it can lead to an interesting paradox that, to a degree, we all face at some point. It’s the desire for personal choice, yet the inability to choose. There are many names for this, but the one I’m most familiar with is the Choice Paralysis. Barry Schwartz gave an amazing TED Talk on this subject in 2005. Now, he gave this speech before Netflix streaming service was a thing, but I imagine he would have a field day with it. Essentially, Choice Paralysis is when there are so many choices open to us that we either 1) fail to make a decision, or 2) eventually make a choice, but are less satisfied with it than if we had fewer options to choose from. I bring up Netflix because you can relate to scrolling through the seemingly endless field of recommendations only to waste 30 minutes to an hour deciding on what to watch, or arguing with others for longer over which show or movie would be best to watch.

This same choice paralysis is experienced by many people at major transition points in life. Whether you’re graduating from high school, graduating from college or grad school, looking at a new career, deciding to get married, looking to move, or deciding on retirement, or something else entirely, the choice paralysis can be overwhelming. If your facing the inability to choose a direction in life, or even just the next steps, you may want to consider working with a professional that can help.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy is a goal directed relationship with a professional that has the training and ability to help you discover the things about yourself that can make these, and other struggles in life, something you can face and overcome. In therapy, I will work with you to help you understand how you think, what your strengths are, how you ended up at the point you are at right now, and what your options are from here. I will help you reach the goals that you have set for yourself, and process through changes, hang-ups, and trials you may face along the way. Through our sessions together, we will grasp at an understanding of your thinking process, core beliefs, how emotions impact these beliefs and decisions you make and desires you have. Ultimately I can help you discover the passions and pursuits you may have within you.

Through therapy, you can gain a unique perspective for yourself and your position in the world, and discover your direction.
